Add Map Data - USA Demographics

The USA Demographics kit shows every census tract in the United States on your map. Click a tract to see its population, income, age, race, education and housing data from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. You can save a tract to your map as a shape with all of its data, or add the data to every marker on your map at once.

A census tract is a small area the Census Bureau uses to count people. Most tracts have between 1,200 and 8,000 residents, so a city is split into many tracts.

Add the kit to your map

1. Open your map at scribblemaps.com/create and sign in.
2. In the bottom-right corner of the map, click the Maps & Data thumbnail.
3. Click the Kits tab.
4. On the USA Demographics card, click Use Kit.

The window closes and the tract boundaries appear on the map, each labeled with its tract number. Zoom in to a city to see them clearly.

You can also open the kit from Quick Actions: press Ctrl + / (or Cmd + / on a Mac) and type "Demographics" or "Census".

See the data for a tract

Click any tract. A pop-up shows its data, including:

• Population, men and women, and median age
• Median household income, median income and per capita income
• Employment, poverty and uninsured rates
• Share of adults with a bachelor's degree
• Median home value, median gross rent, homeownership rate and household size
• Population by race and ethnicity

To keep a tract, click ADD TO MAP. Scribble Maps adds the tract as a polygon, and the polygon carries all of the tract's data. You can style it, filter by its values and see it in the data table like any other shape.

Add demographic data to all of your markers

The kit panel in the bottom-right corner of the map has an Add Data To All Markers button.

1. Put your markers on the map, for example by importing a spreadsheet of addresses.
2. Click Add Data To All Markers.

Scribble Maps finds the census tract under each marker and adds that tract's data to the marker. Markers outside the USA are left unchanged. When it finishes you see Done adding data, and the new fields show in each marker's pop-up and in the data table, ready for filters, styling and charts.

Remove the kit

Click Remove Layer or the X on the kit panel. Only one kit can be on the map at a time, so adding another kit also removes this one. Tracts and markers you already saved keep their data.
