Introduction
When you're drawing a large and detailed polygon, you might need to move the Map View before you finish drawing the polygon.
In this case, the polygon automatically completes when you select the Hand Tool to move the Map View.
To help you draw large and detailed polygons, we recommend these 2 methods.
(Method 1) - Draw lines to create the polygon, then fill it in
Draw and connect the individual edges
- Select the Line Tool in the top toolbar.
Quick Key: Or you can press the "Z" button on your keyboard.
- In the Map View, click and drag from the beginning to the end of the line.
- Start drawing the second line by hovering over the end-point of the first line.
You will see a black circle appear.
- Continue drawing the second line by clicking and dragging from the black circle to the end of the line.
Note: If you want to move the map after drawing a line, you can quickly toggle to the Hand Tool.
Quick Key: Press and hold the "Shift" button on your keyboard. - Continue drawing the lines to form the boundary edges of the polygon.
- When you draw the last line to close the polygon, you will start drawing from a black circle and end at a black circle.
Add the interior fill colour to merge the lines
- (Optional) In the top toolbar, select the Fill Colour Picker to choose the colour of the polygon's fill area.
The Fill Colour Picker is the Bucket Icon displaying the tooltip:
"Change fills. Fill connected lines". - Select the Fill/Change Colour Tool in the top toolbar.
The Fill/Change Colour Tool is the Bucket Icon displaying the tooltip:
"Change colours of an overlay or fill connected lines. To change lines, click directly on line." - In the Map View, click inside the polygon's boundaries.
You will see the colour fill the interior of the polygon.
The 2 lines forming the polygon's last point will be merged. So editing the last point will be easier in the next steps.
(Optional) - Change the location of any point on the polygon
Note: On a polygon, a "point" or "corner" is also known as a "vertex".
- Select the Edit/Measure Tool in the top toolbar.
Quick Key: Or you can press the "Q" button on your keyboard.
- Hover over the point.
You will see a blue highlight appear.
- Click and drag the blue highlight to move the point.
(Method 2) - Draw a rough polygon, then add details
Draw the rough polygon
- Select the Polygon Tool in the top toolbar.
Quick Key: Or you can press the "P" button on your keyboard.
- In the Map View, click once to create each of the polygon’s corners, except the last. You close the polygon by double-clicking to create the last corner. For example:
To draw a 4-corner polygon, click once to create each of the first 3 corners. Then double-click to create the 4th corner.
Note: On a polygon, a "corner" or "point" is also known as a "vertex".
Add new vertices to the polygon
- Zoom in to a location where you want to add more detail to the polygon.
- Select the Edit/Measure Tool in the top toolbar.
Quick Key: Or you can press the "Q" button on your keyboard.
- In Map View, you will see a pop-up on the left side. Select "Points".
- Hover over the polygon edge you want to add the vertex to. Then click on the "+" button located at the midpoint of the edge.
You will see the "+" button is now a movable vertex.
- Click and drag to move the new vertex.
- Continue to add new vertices to the edges until the polygon is complete.
(Optional) - Delete a vertex on the polygon
- Select the Delete Tool in the top toolbar.
Quick Key: Or you can press the "E" button on your keyboard.
- Hover over the vertex you want to erase. Then click on the blue highlighted square.
You will see the vertex is erased, and the edge is flattened.
