Introduction
Description and example of a GeoJSON file
GeoJSON is a file format for displaying geospatial data in online maps.
A GeoJSON file contains annotated geographic data in a JSON-based format.
During the import procedure, you can select the:
- Styles for markers.
- Colors for lines and shapes (polygons, etc.)
An example use for a GeoJSON file is: you can transfer the data for marker locations from ArcGIS (Esri) into Scribble Maps.
Step 1
(Option 1) Copy-and-paste the GeoJSON data
- Log in to your Scribble Maps account at:
https://www.scribblemaps.com/create(Optional) To learn how to log in, visit this link:
How to login/register - At the top of the Layers Panel, click the "JSON" Icon displaying the tooltip: "Import GeoJSON".
You will see the window titled: "IMPORT GEOJSON".
- On your computer, open the GeoJSON file by using text editor software. For example:
- Notepad on Windows systems.
- TextEdit on Mac systems.
- Copy the GeoJSON data. For example:

Then use your keyboard to press:
- Ctrl + C (for Windows).
- Command + C (for Macs).
- Paste the text in the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window.
Paste by clicking on the text field. Then use your keyboard to press:
- Ctrl + V (for Windows).
- Command + V (for Macs).
(Option 2) Import the GeoJSON file from your computer

- Log in to your Scribble Maps account at:

How to login/register - At the top of the Layers Panel, click the "JSON" Icon displaying the tooltip: "Import GeoJSON".
You will see the window titled: "IMPORT GEOJSON".
- Under the text field, click the button: "Load From File".
- On your computer, find the GeoJSON file. Click to select the file. Then click the "Open" button.
In the text field, you will see the imported data.
Step 2 - (Optional)
(Option 1) Use the category list to select a marker style
- In the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, click the Marker Icon located under the text field.
The marker selector window will appear.
- In the left menu pane, click on the folder/sub-folders, then a category.
In the right pane, you will see the list of marker styles.
- Click on a marker style to select it. For this example, we’ll select: "1".
In the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, you will see the new marker style has replaced the previous style.
(Option 2) Use the search box to select a marker style
- In the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, click the Marker Icon located under the text field.
The marker selector window will appear.
- In the bottom-left corner of the marker selector window, you will see a search box displaying the message: "Search All Markers..."
- Type in a keyword for the marker styles you want to find. For example; "car".
You will see the marker styles that include the keyword "car" in the name.
- Click on a marker style to select it. For this example, we'll select the: blue "car_-_coupe_1.png".
In the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, you will see the new marker style has replaced the previous style.
Step 3 - (Optional)
Select the colors for shapes and lines
- In the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, choose the color for the fill areas of the shapes (polygons, etc.)
To choose the color:
- Select the Fill Color Picker.
The Fill Color Picker is the Bucket Icon displaying the tooltip: "Polygon fill color".

There are 2 options for this step:Option 1
Type the Hex Color Code into the field.Option 2- Click on the "White+Color" field to choose how much white is mixed with color.
- (Optional) Click on the Shade Bar to choose how much gray or black is mixed with the "White+Color".
(TIP) If the Shade Bar is set to black, click upwards on the bar to change the color.
- Click on the "White+Color" field to choose how much white is mixed with color.

(Optional) In the "Opacity" field, type in the non-transparency percentage of the final color.
The opacity value:- 0% is invisible.
- 50% is see-through.
- 100% is the solid color.

- Choose the color for the borders of the shapes (polygons, etc.)
The Border Color Picker is the Pencil Icon displaying the tooltip: "Line/border color".
The same color will be also be used for lines and borders.
Step 4
Import the data and view the results
- At the bottom of the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, click the button: "IMPORT GEOJSON".
You will see the message: "GeoJSON imported".
- Click "Ok".
- In the top-right corner of the "IMPORT GEOJSON" window, click the "X" button.
- In the Layers Panel, you will see the imported overlays are listed.
