Scribble Maps Functions

The Menu button offers a wide variety of choices and functions, including:

  • New map
  • Load/Import
  • Save Map
  • Widget/Embed
  • Save Image
  • Save PDF
  • Email Map
  • Share Map (FB)
  • Save KML
  • Save GPX
  • View in Google Maps
  • Settings
  • Map Your List

New map

To create a new map:

  1. Select the New Map icon on the top left of the Menu page that appears.

  3. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.

  5. Select “OK” to create a new map.

Load/Import

To load or import a previously saved ScribbleMap:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.

  3. Select the Load/Import icon on the top left of the Menu page that appears.

  5. Type a ScribbleMap ID in the field and select one of two options:
    1. Import - Adds the contents of one map to the current map
    2. Load - Clears all maps and only loads selected map

  6. Select the Load Map button to continue.

Save Map

To save a map:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Save Map icon on the Menu page that appears.

  5. The Save Map page will appear. The map ID is also listed on this page. Fill in any/all fields to customize your map description and permissions. Available fields include: title, password, description and map visibility.
  6. NOTE: Only premium accounts have the flexibility to make the map public, private or secure. The default for the basic account is a public ScribbleMap. Menu save type.jpg

  7. Click the Save Map button when complete.
  8. NOTE: The loaded map title will be found in the footer of the map screen.

Widget/Embed

NOTE: Widgets work behind https and should work on things like blogger.

To obtain the codes to embed a map into another application:

Once you have saved a map on Scribble Maps you can easily retrieve an interactive map widget embed of the map for your website or blog.

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.

  3. Select the Widget/Embed icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. Select the options you like then you can click preview to see the interactive map widget embed.

  7. Copy and paste the embed code into your website or blog.

Or

  1. You may also click the grey colored “Get Embed Widget” button on the bottom left corner and then follow steps 3 and 4 as specified above.

Save Image

To save a ScribbleMap as an image:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.

  3. Select the Save Image icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. On Save Image/PDF page, Specify the width, height, and dpi.
  6. NOTE: Basic accounts are only able to save a ScribbleMap as an image. Premium accounts are able to save a ScribbleMap in PDF format.

  7. Select the Generate button when complete.

  9. A notification will appear once the image has been saved. Select the Download button.

Save PDF

NOTE: The is a special feature available for premium accounts only

To save a ScribbleMap in PDF format:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Save PDF icon from the Menu page that appears.

Email Map

Once you have saved a map on Scribble Maps you can easily email the map to a friend.

To send a ScribbleMap via email:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Email Map icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. An email form will appear. Complete the fields and select the Send button to deliver the email.

  7. A prompt will appear. You can press the “Ok” button to confirm or the “Send Another” button to send another email.

Share Map (Facebook)

Once you have saved a map on Scribble Maps you can easily share the map on Facebook.

To share a ScribbleMap in Facebook:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Share Map Facebook icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. If/once a connection to Facebook has been established, a window will appear where the post can be modified. If a connection to Facebook has not been established, a login prompt will appear to proceed.

Save KML

Once you have saved a map on Scribble Maps you can easily retrieve a KML of that map.

To save a ScribbleMap in KML:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Save KML icon from the Menu page that appears.
  4. Menu savekml.jpg

  5. A prompt will appear to save the file in the desired location.

Save GPX

Once you have saved a map on Scribble Maps you can easily retrieve a GPX of that map.

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Save GPX icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. A prompt will appear to save the file in the desired location.

View in Google Maps

Once you have saved a map on Scribble Maps you can easily export to Google Maps.

To view a ScribbleMap within the Google Maps platform:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the “View in Google” icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. Another window will open showing the ScribbleMaps annotations as an overlay to a Google Map.

Settings

To adjust the Settings for ScribbleMaps:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.
  2. MenuButton.jpg

  3. Select the Settings icon from the Menu page that appears.

  5. The Settings page will appear with the following fields available for customization:
    • Measurement
    • Length unit
    • Area unit
    • Marker clustering
    • Performance

Or

  1. Click on the small gear icon (also known as the account management panel) located at the bottom left hand corner beneath the “Get Embed” button and follow step #4 of this section.

Map Your List

To map a list from Excel, Google Spreadsheets or other spreadsheet applications:

  1. Select the Menu button on the top menu bar.

  3. Select the Map Your List icon from the Save menu page.

DRAG

The drag tool has three functions:

  1. Click and drag to move the map.

    NOTE: The is a Quick Drag Option. The quick drag option allows you to access the drag option by pressing the shift key and clicking once to drag.

  3. While accessing the drag option you may zoom by double clicking.

    NOTE:

    1. You may also zoom in by clicking on the plus sign button and zoom out by clicking the minus sign button located at the top right corner of the map.

    3. You may expand to fullscreen by clicking on the button at the extreme bottom left of the screen.

ERASER

The eraser tool easily erases Scribble Maps layers (shapes, lines, text and images) from a map.

To use the eraser tool:

  1. Select the eraser tool.

  3. Click once on the item to be erased.
  4. Click “yes” to confirm the deletion from the dialogue box that appears.

COLOR EDIT & FILL

The colors of lines and shapes can easily be changed with the Color Edit & Fill tool.

Change fill color / fill a line shape

To change the fill color and/or to fill a line shape:

  1. Select the Color Edit & Fill tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the fill color by clicking on the fill color chooser.

Change line color

To change the fill color and/or to change the color of a line:

  1. Select the Color Edit & Fill tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the line color by clicking on the line color chooser.

  5. Click on the line to change color.

SCRIBBLE

It is very easy to create a freehand scribble into a ScribbleMap.

Draw scribble

To draw a scribble on the map:

  1. Select the Scribble tool from the top menu bar.
  2. Curved line.jpg

  3. Select the line color and opacity by clicking on the line color chooser.

  5. Select the desired border width and line style by clicking once on each option.

  7. Scribble freely on any location on the map.

Edit / move scribble

To edit or move a scribble:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.

    1. Select one of the following ways to edit and/or move the scribble:
      1. Click on the line and drag the scribble to the another location. Move scribble.jpg
        1. To add sections within a scribble:
          1. Click once the “+” handle bar on the line to create additional handle bars without moving the scribble.
          2. Click and drag the “+” handle bar to simultaneously add a section and while move a part of the scribble.

        2. Click and drag any handle bar to move parts of the scribble.

Delete line / part of a scribble

To delete an entire scribble or part of a scribble:

  1. Select the Eraser tool from the top menu bar.
  2. EraseTool.png

  3. Select the area to be erased. Select one of these two options:
    1. Click on the scribble to erase the entire scribble. Select Yes to confirm deletion when prompted.
    2. Delete scribble.jpg

    3. Click on a handle bar to erase the section of the line section immediately to its left.

LINE

Lines can be easily inserted into a ScribbleMap.

Draw a line

To draw a line:

  1. Select the Line tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the line color and opacity by clicking on the line color chooser.

  5. Select the desired border width and line style by clicking once on each option.

  7. Click and drag between the two intended points on the map to create the line.

Edit / move line

To edit or move a line:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.

  3. Select one of the following ways to edit and/or move the line:
    1. Click and drag the line to the another location.

    3. To add sections within a line:
      1. Click once the “+” handle bar on the line to create additional handle bars without moving the line.
      2. Click and drag the “+” handle bar to simultaneously move a part of the line and add a section.

Delete line / part of a line

FLIGHT LINE / GREAT CIRCLE

The Flight Line / Great Circle tool allows for easy mapping of flight lines between two points on a map.

NOTE: The greater the distance between two points, the greater the curvature of the line as the map is zoomed out.

Draw a Flight Line / Great Circle

To draw a Flight Line / Great Circle:

  1. Select the Flight Line / Great Circle tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the line color and opacity by clicking on the line color chooser.

  5. Select the desired border width and line style by clicking once on each option.

  7. Click once on the first desired location on the map and drag the mouse to the second location and release. Repeat to create as many lines as needed.

Edit/move flight line

To edit/move a flight line:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.

  3. Select one of the following ways to edit and/or move the flight line:
    1. Click on the line once and drag it the another location.

    3. Extend/reduce flight line by clicking once the “+” handle bar (on the end of the line) and dragging it to the preferred width or location.

Delete flight line

To delete a flight line:

  1. Select the Eraser tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the flight line to be erased. Select Yes to confirm deletion when prompted.

DRAW SHAPES

Draw a shape

There are three types of shapes that can be customized and inserted into a ScribbleMap: rectangle, circle and polygon.

Rectangle

To insert a rectangle into ScribbleMap:

  1. Select the Rectangle tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the fill and outline color by clicking on the color chooser for each.

  5. Select the desired border width and line style by clicking once on each option.

  7. Click and drag to draw the rectangle.

Circle

To insert a circle into ScribbleMap:

  1. Select the Circle tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the fill and outline color by clicking on the color chooser for each.

  5. Select the desired border width and style by clicking once on each option.

  7. Click and drag to draw the circle.

Polygon

To insert a polygon into Scribble Maps:

  1. Select the Polygon tool from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the fill and outline color by clicking on the color chooser for each.

  5. Select the desired border width and style by clicking once on each option.

  7. Click and drag to draw one side of the polygon.

  9. Continue to drag, then click to draw each side of the polygon.

  11. Double click to finish drawing the polygon.

Move shape

To move a shape:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.

  3. Click and drag the shape to the location of your choice.

Edit shape

To edit a shape:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.

  3. Select a handle bar on the outline of the shape to modify the shape one side at a time.

  5. To create additional handles, click on the handle bars with the + sign.

Delete shape (fill and/or border)

To delete a shape (fill and/or border)

  1. Select the Eraser button from the top menu.

  3. Because the shape consists of two parts (fill and border) each part can/must be deleted separately by clicking once on the area to be deleted.

PLACE TEXT

Place text

It is very easy to place text in Scribble Maps. This tools allows for descriptive text as well as code to be applied to a text box. The text box can be customized to include text, a YouTube video, image or SoundCloud track.

  1. From the top menu bar on your map’s home page, select the PlaceText tool found on the right hand side of the top menu.

  3. Click on the location you want the text to be inserted. A dialogue box will appear. Type a title and/or description.

Additional textbox options

The text box also provides additional options for coding, placement and formatting.

YouTube video

To insert a YouTube video:

  1. Select the YouTube icon from the icon menu on the right of the box.

  3. Type in the YouTube address of the video to be inserted.

  5. The shortcode will appear in the Description section. Width and height can be modified. Select Save when complete.

  7. The YouTube video will appear on the map.

  9. If you would like to resize your video OR edit the video link, select the Edit Overlays tool from the top menu bar.

    1. The text box will reappear. You can:
      • resize the video by manually typing width and height specifications.
      • edit the video link directly.
  11. If a change does need to be made, delete the contents of the Description box and repeat the process.

Image

To insert an image into the text box:

  1. Select the image icon on the top right of the text box.

  3. Enter the URL of the image in the dialogue box that appears.

  5. The full size image will appear in the background along with the text box and shortcodes. Width and height can be manipulated directly in the Description section.

    NOTE: To resize image while maintaining original image proportions, enter a value for either width OR height and leave the other field blank. Imagewhenter.jpg

SoundCloud

To insert a SoundCloud

  1. Select the SoundCloud icon from the icon menu on the right of the box.

  3. Type in the embed code for the SoundCloud to be inserted.

  5. The shortcode will appear in the Description section. Width and height can be modified. Select Save when complete.

  7. The SoundCloud will appear on the map.

To resize your SoundCloud OR edit the code

  1. Select the Edit Overlays tool from the top menu bar.

  3. The text box will reappear. You can:
    • resize the SoundCloud by manually typing width and height specifications.
    • edit the SoundCloud directly.

  4. If a change does need to be made, delete the contents of the Description box and repeat the process.
Latitude and longitude

Latitude and longitude can be set manually. Precise locations can be typed into the fields directly or be increased/decreased one increment at a time with the arrow buttons to the right of the coordinate.

Advanced Editing

Advanced editing and formatting options can be accessed by clicking the Advanced Editing link at the bottom of the dialogue box. Advanced options to control the formatting of the description will appear. A toolbar with editing options will appear below the Description box. Advanced.png

In the row of buttons that appear, the following tools and functions are available for modification:

  1. font
  2. font size
  3. font color
  4. bold
  5. italic
  6. underline
  7. insert bullet points
  8. insert number list
  9. view source code
  10. left justify
  11. center justify
  12. right justify
Return to Simple Editing mode

To return to Simple Editing mode from Advanced Editing mode, select Simple Editing from the bottom of the text toolbox. Simple3.jpg

Format/edit text

To format/edit text you must:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.
  2. Editoverlays.png

  3. Click once on the text box to be edited. A text box preview will open.

  5. Click once on the pencil icon to enter simple edit mode.

  7. Type the desired text in the Description area or highlight the text to be changed.

  9. Click once on the relevant formatting tool; and
  10. Click Save.

Move text

To move text from one location on the map to another:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays button.

  3. Move the box in one of two ways:
    1. click and drag the text box to the desired location.
    2. click once to make the text editor appear and manually type in exact coordinates in the latitude/longitude section.

Delete text

To delete text:

  1. Select the Eraser button from the top menu.

  3. Click once on the text box you want to delete.

PLACE MARKER

Scribble Maps offers an exciting array of visual place markers to apply to your map.

Insert a place marker

To insert a place marker:

  1. Select the Place Marker tool on the top right menu bar.

  3. Click a location on the map. The marker library will appear. Choose and click on a marker from the library.

  5. The arrow mouse pointer will convert into the marker that was selected. A white rotation toolbox will appear on the bottom right.

    NOTE: The direction of a place marker can be modified once it has been set on a map. To set the rotation of the place marker:

    1. move the mouse over the rotation box
    2. click and drag the black circle around the grey circle to your needs
  7. Once the direction of the place marker has been set, move the pointer to the intended location on the map and click once to place the marker. A dialogue box will appear.

  9. Enter data into the fields or leave them blank. Click Save when complete.

Edit a place marker

To edit a place marker text or rotation:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays tool from the top left menu bar.
  2. Editoverlays.png

  3. Select the place maker to be edited. Select the pencil icon that is located inside the place marker description box that appears.

  5. Edit the content, location and rotation of the place marker.

  7. Select the Save button when complete.

Move a place marker

To move a place marker:

  1. Select the Edit Overlays tool from the top left menu bar.

  3. Click and drag the marker to the intended location.

Rotate a place marker

A place marker can be rotated 360 degrees around a point. Rotation is particularly useful for vehicle place markers.

The rotation of a place marker can be defined when it is first placed on the map. (Please see Insert a place marker to create a new place marker with the rotation manually specified.) It can also be modified.

To modify the rotation of a place marker, please see Edit/Move a place marker.

Delete a place marker

To delete a place marker:

  1. Select the Erase tool from the top menu bar.
  2. EraseTool.png

  3. Click once on the place marker to delete.

PLACE IMAGE/OVERLAY

Enhance your ScribbleMap with images.

Insert image

You can add images/overlays to a ScribbleMap in just a few simple steps:

  1. From the top menu bar on your map’s home page, select the Place Image Overlay tool on the right hand side of the top menu.
  2. Insert custom image.png

  3. Enter the URL of the image to be inserted into the map.
      Insert custom image 2.jpg NOTE: Only image URLs are accepted in the field that appears.

    Accepted file types

    The following image extensions are compatible with Scribble Maps: JPEG, PNG and BMP.

    Transparency/Change background color

    Transparency will be retained in some images.

    1. The mouse pointer will turn into a picture logo. Move the mouse pointer to the intended location to insert the image.

    3. Click once in the intended image destination to insert one copy of the image. Each additional click will insert another copy of the image.

    To change text marker background:

    1. Select the bucket tool and then the color you wish to change to.

    Move image/overlay

    To move a previously inserted image:

    1. Select the Edit Overlays tool on the top left side of the main menu.

    3. With the mouse pointer tool selected, click on the image you want to move. A blue box will appear. Click and drag the image to the intended location.

    Resize an image/overlay

    To resize an image/overlay:

    1. Select the Edit Overlays tool on the top left side of the main menu.

    3. Click and drag any corner handle on the image you want to resize to modify the image.

    Delete image/overlay

    To delete a previously inserted image:

    1. Select the Eraser tool from the top row of the main menu.

    3. Click once on the image you want to delete. A dialogue box will appear asking to confirm or cancel the deletion. Select “Yes” to delete. Select “No” to cancel the deletion and return to the map.

SEARCH

The search feature in Scribble Maps is an exciting feature that searches Google Maps addresses, text, layers, markers and mapped locations! To conduct a search: Searchtool.jpg

  1. Type your query directly in the search box.

  3. A dropdown with possible matches will appear.
    1. If the location/information you are seeking appears, select it from the dropdown menu.
    2. If the location/information you are seeking does not appear, continue typing your query and select Enter when complete.

      1. The search engine will include results from Google Maps and Scribble Maps.
  4. Choosing a location will cause a text box to appear with the name of the location and an option to add a place marker.

FEEDBACK

  1. To leave feedback for the ScribbleMaps team you can click on the blue button on the left that is labeled “Feedback.”

    1. A window will appear. On the left you will see a list of ideas or questions that you can browse through. You may click on any button on the list.

      1. If you do this you will see a box open for more details on that entry and any responses posted.

    1. On the right you will be able to directly post your own ideas, suggestions, questions or comments. You may begin by entering your idea. Then below that box you may enter more details if necessary. In the third box you will enter our email address, then press the “Post Idea” button to add your post. You will be notified if or when there is a response to your post.

VIEW OPTIONS

  1. At the bottom right corner you will see a grey button that allows you to choose the type of map you will create, or map layer you will work with.

  3. If you click on this button you will see a dropdown menu that includes the following options.

  5. To the left are the view options that correspond to each map layer selection. The default is Google (map):

Identify the center of your map

Cross hairs in the middle your map indicate the center of the image in the map screen. Center coordinates can be found in the footer of the map screen. Cross Hairs.png

Scale Control

  1. The scale control is located at the footer of the map screen.
  2. Scale control.png

  3. To adjust the scale use the drag tool to double click on the scale. This will reduce the scale.
  4. Scale change.png

    NOTE: Once you have reduced the scale of your map you cannot increase it.
